Springing forward to spring …
After two days of rain, almost 3 inches of the stuff, I’m ready for spring.
Decided to look back in my catalog of images and to review my notes on images may warrant recapturing this spring.
An image I came across was this early spring image of the Boston Public Garden Swan Boats. This image has many issues. The day was dreary, there were distractions , such as people and worn patches in grass and others items drawing attention away from the Swan Boats.

So I decided to see if I could “pullout” a good image by combining techniques that I have been using within Lightroom, with some techniques picked up from Scott Kelby’s 7 Point System book.
Here are the steps I used -
- Applied theLightroom Preset - Old Time Look Presets, which appeared to work well with this image.
- Adjusted the crop to remove a large portion of damaged grass area.
- Exported to Photoshop
- Removed people on bridge, below bridge and near step
- Removed tree support posts, requiring reconstruction of parts of people and boat
- Repaired grass area
- Corrected very slight building keystoning
- Converted to Lab color mode and using Kelby’s 7PS techniques added some punch to image and then back to RgB
- Returned to lightroom - added more sharpness
Resulting in this image -
I could have removed the tree in front of the boat, but what I think I’ll do, is return to the Public Garden in several weeks to capture a better image of this iconic Boston scene.
